Going Places 2: The Unknown Melbourne Map
A Guide to Quirky and Offbeat Places for Curious People
On Monday 6 July, Geography Victoria hosted the second event in our Going Places series. Following another fun round of exploring the globe via the digital game "GeoGuessr", we were delighted to welcome Dr Julian O'Shea for the official launch of a brand-new paper map: The Unknown Melbourne Map.
Rediscovering Our City
In an age of digital navigation, this physical map invites us to slow down, look closer, and rediscover Melbourne with fresh eyes. It serves as a curated guide to the quirky, hidden, and unexpected features that most of us walk past every day without noticing.
For a fascinating hour, Julian shared the story behind the map's creation and highlighted some of the intriguing spots it reveals. From hidden landmarks and unusual public artworks to forgotten history embedded in our streetscapes, the map is an absolute “gift” for a geographer as curiosity and exploration remain at the heart of geography.
